Where salt sits on a Waterdown car
Dundas Street, Highway 5 and Highway 6 get heavy salting, and the rural roads around Waterdown get brine and sand mixed in. All of it ends up in the same places on your car:
- Rocker panels and the bottom of the doors.
- Wheel arches and the inside face of the wheels.
- Behind the bumpers and in the lower trim.
- Door jambs and the edge of the hatch or boot.
Salt holds moisture against metal, and that is how small chips become rust.
The sand and grit in the mix matters as much as the salt. Together they act like a fine sandpaper along the lower doors every time you drive on a slushy day, which is why the lower third of the paint often has the most chips and scuffs.
Why a drive-through wash is not enough
Automatic washes blast the flat surfaces and miss the folds. A bucket wash in sub-zero weather is not an option at home. A mobile service solves both: we bring our own water and work around the cold, and we are not in a hurry to get to the next car.
Washing in the middle of winter is fine as long as the car is dried properly, including seals and jambs, so nothing freezes shut.
The same applies to the wheels. Salt and brake dust bake onto wheel faces and into the barrel, where it pits clear coat and bare aluminum. Cleaning the barrel is something drive-through washes cannot reach.
What the add-on covers
The winter salt mess add-on is +$40 on top of a detail. Exterior details start from $103 $129.
- Heavy pre-rinse of lower panels and arches to float salt and sand off.
- Hand wash and dry.
- Door jambs, sills and trim wiped and dried.
- Wheel faces and barrels scrubbed.
- Iron and tar decontamination for the orange rust specks and road film.
Salt has an effect on carpets too, so if the white tide marks have made it inside, add an interior detail, or book a full detail in Waterdown.
It is worth saying what we are not doing. We are not applying rust-proofing, undercoating or oil sprays, and we do not lift the car. This is a thorough, hand-done cleaning of what can be reached, which removes the corrosive film before it sits for months.
When to book
Waiting for April is the common mistake. The best times are mid-winter during a thaw, and right after the last big salting. Our road salt guide explains the timing, and the salt removal service page has the full list of what we do.
If it is snowing or too cold to wash safely, we reschedule free or move to a covered spot such as your garage.
A second wash in late March or April, once the last salting is done, clears the final layer. If you drive Highway 6 or Dundas Street every day, you will see the crust return within a couple of weeks of any storm.
Booking
We are based in Burlington and travel to Waterdown. You need space beside the car and nothing else. See Waterdown car detailing, then send a quote request.
Send a photo of the lower doors if you can. It helps us see how heavy the crust is and plan the time. Every job ends with a panel-by-panel walk-around, and anything not right is fixed on the spot.
