Rural roads, dirty lower panels

Drive on gravel or freshly oiled roads and the lower third of your car fills with dust and tar. Rocker panels, rear bumpers and wheel arches collect the worst. In wet weather this turns into mud that dries into a crust.

That crust holds grit against the paint. If you wipe it, you scratch it. We pre-soak and rinse first, then wash by hand with clean mitts, so loose dirt comes off before any contact.

Insects join the mix in summer, especially after evening drives past farm fields. The front bumper, mirrors and windscreen base are the first places to check. If bug residue has been baked on, we soften it first rather than scrubbing.

Tar spots and bugs

Fresh pavement and road work leave black tar spots. They do not wash off, and rubbing makes them smear. A tar remover dissolves them in seconds, and the clay bar picks up the rest. Our how often should you detail guide explains how this fits into a regular schedule.

Do not forget the glass. Windscreens near fields collect a film of insects and pollen, and wipers just smear it. We clean glass inside the wash so the view is clear.

Why the lower panels matter most

It is tempting to wash a muddy car from the top, but dirt on the lower panels should come off first, with plenty of water, so it does not get dragged up onto cleaner paint. We work from the top down for contact washing, yet pre-rinse the bottom first, and use separate mitts for the lower third. This is a small habit that prevents a lot of scratches.

Rocker panels also trap salt in winter. If your car is salty as well as dirty, the winter salt add-on is +$40, and the road salt removal guide explains why it should not wait until spring.
