What road salt does to a car

Salt itself is not the whole problem. It holds moisture against metal, which speeds up rust, especially on brake parts, exhaust and the edges of panels. On paint, it dulls the finish and leaves a white film. Inside, it leaves white tide lines and stiffens carpet.

Burlington sees this most in the commuter lanes: salt spray from highway traffic coats the lower third of the car within a single drive.

What we clean

Winter salt mess is an add-on at +$40 to an interior or exterior detail. Exterior details start from $103 $129 and interior details start from $119 $149.

  1. Low-pressure rinse of lower panels, wheel arches and wheels to flush salt.
  2. Hand wash and dry, working from top to bottom.
  3. Iron and tar decontamination for bonded residue.
  4. Door jambs, sills and trim cleaned where salt hides.
  5. Interior mats and carpets shampooed and extracted.
  6. Final dry and inspection.

More detail is on the winter salt removal service page.

The same salt also eats at things that you will not see on a car wash menu, such as the brake calipers and fasteners behind the wheels. We clean as much of the wheel and arch area as we can reach, and flag anything that looks corroded so a mechanic can look at it.

Inside the car: the white tide lines

Boots bring salt into the footwells, where it dries into pale crescent marks along the carpet and mat edges. It stays active: when the cabin warms up and humidity rises, dried salt draws moisture again, which is why the carpet can feel damp days after a snowy drive.

The fix is warm water and extraction, not a dry brush. Steam loosens the crystals, and the extractor pulls them out with the water. Rubber mats help the next winter, and our salt stains from car carpet guide has a home method if you want to try it first.

When to do it

Waiting until spring means salt sits for months. Many owners do one wash in mid-winter, on a mild day, and a thorough detail in March. If you want ongoing defence, our winter protection package adds a protective layer before the salt starts. The road salt removal guide covers a DIY routine, and the winter car care checklist adds more.

Questions people ask

  • Winter salt mess is a +$40 add-on to a detail.
  • We flush wheel arches and lower panels. We do not offer a full undercarriage service.
  • Cold weather is difficult for water-based work. If it is too cold, we reschedule free or move to a covered spot such as a garage.
  • Usually, yes. Salt dissolves in water, so steam and extraction lift most tide lines.
