Salt removal in Hamilton.

Cars in Hamilton pick up road salt, and in the lower city they also pick up dust from industry and rail. When wet salt and fine metallic particles combine on the paint, they leave a gritty film, and tiny orange-brown specks can form where the particles stick and rust. They look like freckles on a white or silver car.

Older lower-city streets add one more twist: cars parked on the street overnight sit beside plowed banks that melt and refreeze, so the salty slush runs back under the doors and into the sills. Door sills and the bottom edges of doors collect it, and they are the places that rust first.

Anyone who drives the Jolley Cut, the Claremont Access or the Sherman Access in winter knows how heavily those hills are treated. Cars arrive at the top with a grey crust on the lower doors, wheel arches and rear. Brine is also kicked up on the long Mountain arterial roads, which means the underside of the car sees almost constant spray from December to March.

We flush the lower panels and wheel arches first, at low pressure, to move that crust before we touch the paint with a mitt. This avoids grinding salt crystals into the finish.

Drivers commuting along the Red Hill Valley Parkway, the Lincoln Alexander Parkway or the 403 see the same pattern at higher speed: the spray hits the front bumper, mirrors and the rear window, and the salt dries in a pale haze that is easy to ignore until the sun comes out. Cleaning it in the middle of winter, not the end, stops it settling for months.
