What a quick wash misses
A drive-through wash rinses the paint, but salt hides in door jambs, the edges of the boot lid, the wheel arches and seams. It also stays in the carpet. Those are the places where rust starts and where the white tide lines show.
Salt is worst when it cannot dry out. Parked in a heated garage, a salty car drips and the moisture speeds up corrosion in the places you cannot see. That is a good reason to clean salt off rather than leave it for the spring.
Oakville cars see a mix of salt and brine spray off the highway and slush on residential streets, so the lower third of the car, the arches and the sills collect most of it.
The Oakville approach
Winter salt mess is a +$40 add-on to an interior or exterior detail. Exterior details start from $103 $129 and interior details start from $119 $149.
- Flush wheel arches, sills and lower panels.
- Hand wash from the top down.
- Open every door, the boot and the bonnet edge and clean the jambs.
- Iron decontamination for bonded residue.
- Extract carpets and mats.
- Dry and inspect.
See the winter salt removal service for more.
Door jambs deserve a special mention. They are rarely cleaned and are one of the first places salt-driven rust appears, especially along the bottom edge. We wipe them, then dry them, rather than leave them wet. We also flag anything that looks like early corrosion, though we cannot repair it.
Salt in the carpet
For the inside, our guide to cleaning salt stains from car carpet explains why plain water and a cloth leave a ring. Salt must be dissolved and pulled out, which is what extraction does.
We also lift floor mats and clean underneath them, because salty slush pools under the mat and soaks the pad.
Rubber mats help prevent this next winter: they trap the slush and can be rinsed outside.
Timing: after storms, not just in spring
In Oakville, mild spells between storms make a mid-winter clean possible. Booking after a big thaw lets us flush the worst of it. For the season ahead, our winter protection package adds a layer before the first snowfall.
It is also worth knowing that waiting until all the snow is gone means weeks of extra exposure. A salt clean in early March, then a full detail in April once things warm up, is a common pattern for our Oakville customers.
