Where Milton's salt comes from
Milton is a commuting town, and commuters pick up salt in volume. Highway lanes get heavy treatment before a storm, and the spray that comes off the car ahead of you lands on your bumper, doors and rocker panels. Local streets and rural roads add a second layer of brine, which dries to a grey film that clings to the lower third of the car.
Salt itself does not eat paint. The trouble is that it holds moisture against metal. Chips, seams, brake parts and the underside stay damp longer than they should, and that is where corrosion starts. Our rust prevention guide explains the process.
Newer homes in Milton often have a garage, but plenty of cars still sit outside overnight, and a car that comes in wet and sits in a warm garage can be worse for a while: the heat melts the salt crust and spreads it into every crevice. Either way, the sooner it is rinsed off, the less time it has to work.
What gets cleaned
The winter salt mess is a +$40 add-on to an exterior or interior detail. Exterior details start from $103 $129 and interior details start from $119 $149. On the outside we work from the bottom up:
- Low-pressure flush of wheel arches, lower panels and the rear of the car, where salt packs in.
- Hand wash and dry, then iron decontamination to dissolve what is bonded to the paint.
- Door jambs, sills and trim, where salty water pools.
- Wheels and tires cleaned, since salt dries the rubber and pits uncoated wheel faces.
- Brake dust and salt scrubbed from between the spokes, where the two combine into a hard film.
We do not offer undercarriage rust-proofing. We rinse what can be reached safely, and you can read more on the winter salt removal page.
Inside: the white tide lines
Everyone in Milton knows the pattern: boots come in wet, melt off, and leave pale lines that dry across the mat and up the carpet. Left alone, the salt keeps pulling moisture into the pile, which is how you get a damp, stale smell in February.
We lift the mats, vacuum, then shampoo and extract the carpet so the salt comes out with the water instead of drying where it sits. Rubber mats are a good idea for the season, and a stiff brush at the door helps before you step in. Our guide to cleaning salt stains from car carpet covers what you can do yourself in between.
Timing it right
Do not wait for April. A visit in mid-winter, during a thaw, clears what has built up and keeps it from sitting through the next freeze. Many people book once in January or February and again after the last snow. If your commute is mostly highway, you will usually see more build-up on the front bumper, mirrors and the back of the car, because those are the surfaces that take the spray. The road salt removal guide and the Ontario winter car care checklist have more on pacing it.
Booking in Milton
We bring water, power and lighting. In winter a garage is a big help for drying and for keeping the interior warm, but we can plan around a driveway and tell you if the forecast calls for a move or reschedule, which is free. Start on the Milton car detailing page or send the 60-second quote form.
