A smell guide for country cars
The same bad smell can have five different causes. Here is how we read yours:
- Barn or manure: boots and coveralls that rode in the car; the odour sits in carpet and floor mats.
- Sour: spilled milk, a forgotten lunch, or a leaking drink under the seat.
- Musty: damp carpet from snowmelt or a wet dog after a swim in the Credit River.
- Smoke or vape: residue on every soft surface and on the glass.
- Cooking oil or fast food: a long commute meal that spilled.
Why commuter cars hold smells
Georgetown has a GO station, and many cars sit in a lot for ten hours with the windows shut. In summer the cabin gets hot, and anything organic in it ferments. In winter, wet boots and snow melt into the carpet, and the damp stays until the car dries out, which may be weeks.
Cars that run on Highway 7 to the GTA and back accumulate fast-food bags and coffee spills more than most, and those spills end up between the seat and the console.
The same goes for the weekend. A hockey bag left in the boot overnight, a wet towel from a dip in a creek, or groceries from a farm stand all leave something behind. Heat and a closed cabin do the rest, and by Monday the smell is in the fabric.
What we do
Smoke and odour treatment is a +$50 add-on to an interior detail, which starts from $119 $149. The visit takes 2 to 4 hours.
- Strip the car to the carpet and search for the source.
- Vacuum thoroughly.
- Steam the seats, seams and vents.
- Shampoo and extract carpets and cloth.
- Clean glass, trim and the headliner edge, where smell leaves a film.
- Treat the vents.
See the odour removal page for more.
Steam is the workhorse here, because it gets heat and moisture into seams where a sponge cannot reach, then extraction pulls it back out along with the dirt. Fabric seats get the most attention, since they hold smells longest. Leather is cleaned and conditioned instead of soaked.
What is outside our reach
If coolant smells sweet in the cabin, or you smell fuel, that is a mechanical problem. Please have it looked at by a garage before any cleaning. We also cannot fix leaking seals or a clogged AC drain, though we will say if we suspect one. For smoke, our guide on removing smoke smell from a car covers what works at home.
A heavily smoked car may need two visits. We will tell you straight after the first.
One more honest limit: a small car with a strong barn smell in the carpet may need extra time, and sometimes a second visit. The sooner we get to the source, the better the result.
Booking
We are based in Burlington and travel to Halton Hills, including Georgetown and Acton. The Halton Hills car detailing page lists what we cover. Send details through the quote form, with a note on what the smell resembles and how long it has been there.
We work Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and bring our own water, power and lighting. A garage or covered spot is ideal if the weather is wet. Every job ends with a panel-by-panel walk-around, so you can judge the result with your own nose before we pack up.
