What enhancement is, and what it is not
Paint enhancement is a single machine polishing pass using a polish and pad matched to your paint. It removes a very thin layer of clear coat to level light scratches, which is what swirl marks are. The result is sharper reflections, deeper colour and more gloss.
It is not multi-stage paint correction. We do not chase deep scratches, remove heavy defects or wet-sand clear coat. If a scratch catches your fingernail, it is too deep for one step, and we will tell you so up front.
It suits dark or black cars that show swirls in the sun, vehicles that have been through brush washes, and drivers who want a noticeable improvement without the cost of heavy correction. To see how swirls form, read what causes swirl marks.
A simple way to see the effect is in sunlight on a dark car. Swirls show as a fine web of circles around the sun's reflection. After enhancement, the reflection looks tighter and the web is much fainter. It is a visible gain, though not a flawless mirror, and we explain the difference when we quote.
The process, step by step
Polishing is only as good as the cleaning before it. Any grit left behind would cut new scratches.
- Wash and rinse the car, including panel gaps and door jambs.
- Decontaminate with iron remover and tar remover, then clay the paint. See our clay bar guide.
- Dry and inspect the paint under lighting, noting the worst panels.
- Test a small area with a polish and pad combination to set the approach.
- Polish panel by panel with a machine, working in overlapping passes and wiping residue.
- Wipe each panel with a prep solution to remove polishing oils and show what the paint really looks like.
- Walk around with you and check the panels in the light.
Without protection, fresh paint can mar again quickly. That is why we suggest finishing with a sealant or ceramic.
Pads and polishes are matched to the paint, since soft Japanese paint, hard German paint and thin repaints all behave differently. The test spot in the process is how we choose. We also take care at edges, body lines and badges, where clear coat is thinnest.
How long it takes
Plan for a half to a full day, depending on size and condition. A small coupe with light swirls is faster than a large SUV in the same shape. Dark colours take more care and inspection time.
It takes time because it cannot be rushed. We wash and decontaminate first, then polish with proper working time on each panel. As with other long jobs, a garage or covered spot is helpful if the weather is poor.
If your car has been repainted, tell us. Aftermarket paint can be thinner or softer and may need a lighter approach. We also check for existing clear coat failure, which shows as peeling or cloudy patches and cannot be polished away.
How it is priced
Standalone paint enhancement is quoted with your vehicle, since paint condition and panel count drive the work. If you are coating the car, enhancement is already included as the prep step in ceramic coating, which starts from $399 $499.
- Standalone: quoted with your vehicle.
- With ceramic: included in the package price.
- Size: SUV +$30, truck +$40, van or minivan +$50, exotic +$60 apply to package work.
- Extra vehicles in the same booking are 20% off.
Photos of the paint in sunlight help us judge. Use the quote form and expect a tailored reply, usually same day.
As an example, if you book ceramic coating on a sedan, the enhancement is already in the price. If you only want swirls reduced and no coating, we quote enhancement on its own, and a sealant can be added to hold the gloss. Photos help us price either option accurately.
Keeping swirls from returning
Most swirls come from how the car is washed, not from driving.
- Wash by hand with clean mitts and a two-bucket method.
- Skip brush and cloth tunnel washes.
- Use a separate towel for each pass, and wash towels without fabric softener.
- Keep paint protected with sealant or ceramic so washing contacts a slick layer, not raw clear coat.
If you are weighing protection, our comparison of ceramic coating, wax and sealant sets out the options.
If you are curious how much of a difference to expect, a few photos in direct sunlight, taken at a low angle, tell us a lot. Send them with the quote request. We reply with what a one-step polish is likely to do and what it is not.
Why polish at your place
Polishing needs power, light and a clean workspace. We bring all three to your driveway or garage in Burlington or Oakville, and portable lighting shows defects that shade hides. You can see the work at every stage.
For more local detail, see our pages on paint polishing in Burlington and paint polishing in Oakville.
It also pairs with headlight work. If lenses are cloudy, see headlight restoration, which uses a similar abrasive-and-polish process.
