What kind of stain is it?

Not all stains behave alike. Coffee and juice are tannin and sugar stains that respond to heat and gentle cleaners. Grease and lotion are oil-based and need a solvent step first. Ink and dye transfer, such as from new jeans on light seats, are the hardest. Milk and food go sour and carry odour with them.

Using the wrong product on the wrong stain sets it. That is why home attempts sometimes leave a darker ring than the original mark. This page is for stains that did not come out with a cloth and some soap, or ones you do not want to risk making worse.

If winter salt is the problem, our guide on cleaning salt stains from car carpet explains what is happening.

Fabric type matters too. Dark cloth hides stains but shows chalky residue from bad cleaning. Light fabric shows everything. Microsuede and alcantara-style surfaces need gentle agitation and very little water. Knowing what the surface is shapes everything we do.

How we lift a stain

Stain work is part of Interior Restoration, with the heavy stains add-on adding dedicated time for the worst spots.

  1. Vacuum thoroughly so dry soil does not turn to mud when wet.
  2. Identify the stain type and test a small hidden area.
  3. Pre-treat with the right product and let it dwell, since dwell time does the real work.
  4. Agitate gently with a soft brush so fibres are not damaged.
  5. Hot shampoo extraction pulls the loosened stain and cleaner out of the fabric, not into it.
  6. Repeat on stubborn marks, then rinse with clean water extraction to leave no residue.
  7. Check results at the walk-around with you.

Leather and vinyl stains are different, and we cover them on the leather cleaning and conditioning page.

The extraction step is the difference between professional work and a home attempt. A spray and a rub pushes the stain deeper and leaves detergent behind, which then attracts dirt. Hot water with strong suction takes both the soil and the product out of the fabric, so the carpet dries clean instead of sticky.

Time and realistic results

Expect 3 to 4.5 hours with several stains. Many marks come out entirely. Some fade a lot but do not disappear, especially old ones, dye transfer, bleach marks and burns. Those are damage rather than dirt, and no cleaner can fix them. We tell you before we start whether a stain is likely to move.

Fabric needs a few hours to dry. Windows cracked and a little sun help. Our detailing time guide has more.

Some stains return as the fabric dries, a process called wicking, when residue deep in the foam rises to the surface. If a spot does reappear, tell us at the walk-around or after, and we address it. Wicking is common on large milk or coffee spills that soaked into padding.

How it is priced

Interior details start from $119 $149. Heavy stains add +$50. That covers dedicated attention on multiple or stubborn marks.

  • Heavy stains add-on +$50.
  • SUV +$30, truck +$40, van or minivan +$50, exotic +$60.
  • Pet hair +$40, smoke or odour +$50 when relevant.

If you only have a light mark or two, a regular Interior Restoration usually covers them without the add-on. Send photos with your quote request and we advise honestly on whether the add-on is needed.

As an example, a hatchback with a coffee spill on the rear seat and a few muddy footprints is a plain Interior Restoration. The same car with a spilled smoothie that has baked for two summers is likely to need the heavy stains add-on.

What to do until we arrive

The first hour matters most, and the rest of the week less so.

  • Blot spills. Do not rub.
  • Use plain cool water and a clean cloth. Avoid household cleaners that leave residue.
  • Do not apply heat, such as a hair dryer, to an unknown stain.
  • Keep a small towel in the car for next time.

For an overall rhythm, see how often to detail in how often should you detail your car.

Seat covers and floor liners are cheap ways to prevent repeat stains. If you transport kids, pets or tradespeople's tools, they pay for themselves quickly. A small bottle of plain water and a clean cloth in the glovebox handles most fresh spills in the first minute.

Why driveway extraction wins

Extraction needs hot water, strong suction and time. We bring our own water, power and lighting to your driveway in Burlington or Oakville, and you can point to the stain you care about most. We also check back with you as we go if something needs a decision.

Questions people ask

  • Often yes, in part. Age, fabric and the original substance all matter. We explain what is likely before we start.
  • It is a +$50 add-on to Interior Restoration for extra time and treatment on stubborn or multiple stains.
  • Usually it blends in as the fabric dries. If a mark was a dye stain or burn, some trace may remain.
  • Yes, with leather-safe products rather than extraction. Ink on leather is difficult and not always fully removable.
  • Extraction leaves it damp rather than wet. Most fabric is dry in a few hours with the windows cracked.
