What detailing can and cannot do for a lease return
Lease inspectors look for damage beyond normal wear. Dents, deep scratches, torn upholstery, curb-rashed wheels and warning lights are charged for, and detailing cannot fix those. What detailing does is remove everything that is just dirt: stains, grime, smells, haze on the paint, tar and brake dust.
That matters because dirt hides the condition of the car and can make borderline marks look worse. A clean, well-presented vehicle also avoids any argument about whether a mark is a stain or a defect.
This page is for anyone returning a lease in Burlington, Oakville or nearby, whether it is a sedan or an SUV. Our lease return detailing checklist lists what to check before you drop it off.
Think about what an inspector sees first. The front seats, the driver's footwell, the wheels, the cargo area and the paint in daylight. Those are the places where grime reads as neglect, and they are the places we spend the most time. A tidy interior and clean wheels set the tone for the rest of the check.
The same goes for smells. A stale or smoky cabin gets noted, and it can be written up as a cleaning charge. Removing the source before the return is cheaper than arguing about it later.
What we do, in order
For most lease vehicles the right package is The Full Detail. It covers both the inside and the outside and ends with a protective layer.
- Remove the mats and personal items, then deep vacuum carpets, seats, seams and trunk.
- Steam vents, cupholders and crevices, and shampoo and extract carpets and cloth seats.
- Clean and condition leather, and wipe all trim, screens and the steering wheel.
- Wash, decontaminate and clay the paint, and clean wheels, tires and arches.
- Apply a sealant to the paint and dress trim and tires.
- Clean all glass inside and out.
- Walk around with you, panel by panel, and fix anything not right.
If the interior is the worry, such as pet damage or smoke, add the relevant item on top.
Pay attention to the small things too. Cupholders, door pockets and the gap beside the console collect coins and wrappers. Sticky residue on the steering wheel and shifter looks worse than it is, and steam clears it quickly. These are low-cost fixes that make the cabin feel looked after.
Timing it right
Aim for a few days before the return appointment, not the same morning. That leaves time for carpets to dry, gives you room to reschedule around weather and lets you fix anything the walk-around shows.
The detail itself takes 3 to 5 hours. Our guide on how long detailing takes explains how that changes with condition.
Keep all keys, manuals and accessories ready, because we will leave the car in presentable state and you do not want to be searching for the second key fob at the dealership.
If you have not yet received a pre-inspection report from your leasing company, ask for one. It lists items likely to be charged, and you can plan detailing around it. Cleaning charges are the easiest to avoid, since they are about condition rather than damage.
How it is priced
Lease return detailing is usually The Full Detail, which starts from $176 $220. Sedans and coupes are the base.
- SUV +$30, truck +$40, van or minivan +$50, exotic +$60.
- Pet hair +$40, smoke or odour +$50, heavy stains +$50.
- Heavy salt buildup after winter: +$40.
- Additional vehicles in the same booking are 20% off.
If you only need one half, such as a clean interior, interior detailing may be enough. Describe your situation on the quote page and we recommend the cheapest package that does the job.
As an example, a sedan returning after three winters with salt in the carpet and a dull exterior would be The Full Detail at the base price, with the +$40 winter salt add-on if the carpet needs it. An SUV adds +$30. We total the lines for you before booking.
Tips for a smoother return
A few things in your control help the inspection.
- Fix warning lights and obvious chips ahead of time where cost-effective.
- Take dated photos of the car after detailing, from all sides.
- Return the vehicle with the same equipment it came with, including mats and manuals.
- Read your lease for specific cleaning and condition requirements.
Headlights that have yellowed can look dated too. See headlight restoration.
Remember accessories that came with the car, such as a spare key, the cargo cover, the charging cable on an EV and the floor mats. Missing items are a common charge, and they are easy to overlook while you are focused on cleaning. A short checklist the night before saves a surprise.
Why mobile fits a lease return
The detail happens at home, so you do not have to arrange a ride back from a shop. We serve Burlington and Oakville and bring our own water, power and lighting. You can approve the result at the walk-around before you leave for the dealership.
If rain moves in, we reschedule free or move to a garage.
If you also want paint swirls reduced, ask about paint enhancement. It will not remove deep scratches, but a more even finish helps the car look better in daylight.
