Lease return detailing checklist.

Lease inspectors judge condition against wear-and-tear standards, and a clean, well-presented car makes everything easier. This checklist covers what to clean, what detailing can fix and what it cannot.

Short answer

Before returning a leased car, deep clean the interior, remove stains and odours, wash and decontaminate the paint, and check the wheels, glass and lights. Detailing improves presentation and can remove light wear, but it cannot repair dents, deep scratches or torn upholstery, which are what usually drive charges.

How lease inspections work.

When you return a leased vehicle, an inspector compares its condition to the lessor's wear-and-tear guide. Standards vary by company, so read yours before you start. The general principle is the same everywhere: normal use is acceptable, damage and neglect are charged.

A clean car does not erase damage, but it changes what the inspector sees. Light surface marks, grime, stains and odours are the items detailing handles, and they are also the ones that make a car look worse than it is. Deep dents, cracked windshields, curb-rashed wheels and burns in upholstery are separate repairs.

Do two things first. Get the lessor's wear-and-tear guidelines, and book a pre-inspection if your lessor offers one. A pre-inspection shows you exactly what will be flagged while you still have time to fix it.

The interior checklist.

Interiors are where an otherwise good car loses points, because stains and smells feel like neglect even when the car is mechanically perfect.

  • Carpets and mats: full vacuum, then shampoo or extraction on any stained or salt-marked areas. Winter leaves white tide marks that vacuuming will not fix.
  • Seats: check for stains, rips, burns and sagging. Clean fabric, and clean and condition leather so it does not look dry or cracked.
  • Dashboard, console and door cards: remove dust, residue and sticky patches. Check for scuffs from keys or phones.
  • Headliner: spot-check for marks or smoke staining. Do not soak it; the adhesive can fail.
  • Odour: smoke, pet and food smells are the most commonly overlooked item. If anything lingers, deal with it before turn-in.
  • Glass and mirrors: streak-free inside and out.
  • Remove everything of yours: mounts, dash cams, adhesive pads, phone chargers and child seat marks where possible.

Jay's lease return detailing pulls this together, and interior detailing starts at from $119 $149. Heavy stains add +$50, smoke or odour treatment +$50, and pet hair +$40.

The exterior checklist.

Inspectors walk the car in daylight, so paint condition shows. Here is what to check, in order.

  1. Wash properly. Hand wash with a clean mitt. A brush car wash adds fine swirls and is a bad idea before inspection.
  2. Decontaminate. Iron and tar removal and a clay bar pass take off the rough, gritty film that makes paint look dull.
  3. Look for light swirls and marks. A one-step machine polish reduces light swirl marks and haze, making paint look noticeably cleaner. It does not remove deep scratches.
  4. Check the wheels. Clean thoroughly. Light brake dust residue comes off, but curb damage does not.
  5. Inspect lights. Yellowed or hazy headlights look worn. Headlight restoration is quoted with your vehicle.
  6. Dress tires and trim. Faded plastic trim can be revived with the right products.

Before you start, walk around the car at dusk with a torch to find marks you might miss in daylight. It is better you find them than the inspector.

What detailing can and cannot fix.

Being honest about this saves you money. Detailing handles dirt, grime, stains, odours, haze, light swirling and surface dullness. It does not repair structural or cosmetic damage.

Detailing can improve

  • Dirty, stained or salt-marked carpets.
  • Dull, grimy or sticky interior surfaces.
  • Light swirl marks and dull paint.
  • Cloudy headlights.
  • Smoke, pet and food odours.

Detailing cannot fix

  • Dents, deep scratches and paint chips down to primer.
  • Cracked or chipped windshields.
  • Rips, burns or heavy fading in upholstery.
  • Bent or curb-damaged wheels.

For the second group, get a repair quote and compare it with the charge you would face. In some cases paying for a small repair beforehand is cheaper than the end-of-lease fee.

Timing and booking it.

Book the detail a week or two before turn-in rather than the day before. That leaves time to address anything the detailer notices, and a car should not be driven through slush or rain right after cleaning. If you commute on the QEW or 403 in winter, you want the car as clean as possible on the day of inspection, not covered in fresh road salt.

The Full Detail starts at from $176 $220 and covers the interior and exterior with a final walk-around. If the paint is the main concern, you can start with exterior detailing instead. Jay's travels to you in Burlington and across Halton, so you do not have to organise a drop-off.

Questions people ask

  • It is not required, but a clean car presents better and reveals only genuine wear. Detailing removes dirt, stains and odours that an inspector might otherwise count against the car.
  • Light swirls and fine surface marks can be reduced with a machine polish. Deep scratches that catch a fingernail need paint repair, not detailing.
  • Typically body damage, paint condition, wheels and tires, glass, interior stains and tears, odours and missing items. Standards differ by lessor, so check your own guide.
  • About one to two weeks before turn-in is a good window, which leaves time to fix anything that comes up.
  • Compare a repair quote with the likely charge. Small, inexpensive repairs sometimes cost less than the end-of-lease fee, but it varies, so ask for a pre-inspection first.
