Why they cloud over
Modern headlight lenses are plastic with a clear factory coating. UV light, road grit and years of washing wear that coating away, and the plastic underneath oxidizes into a yellow haze. Less light gets through, and what does get through scatters.
Our guide to why headlights turn yellow goes into the chemistry if you are curious.
Parking outdoors accelerates it. A car that sits under the sun in a driveway all day yellows faster than one that lives in a garage, and the side that faces the sun longest tends to cloud first.
Why it matters on Waterdown roads
Plenty of Waterdown drives involve unlit roads: a drive home on a rural concession after dark, or a dim stretch of Highway 6 in the rain. When headlights are hazy, you see less far ahead and oncoming drivers catch more glare. Winter makes it worse, with short days and snow on the road.
Restoration does not make a lens better than new, but a hazy lens usually looks and performs far closer to clear afterwards.
A simple test: park facing a wall at night and compare the two beams, or look at the lens in daylight. If you see a milky film, yellow tint or fine cracking, the coating is gone.
Fog on the lower stretches near the creek valleys makes the difference between good and poor light even clearer.
What we do
- Mask the paint and trim around the lens.
- Wet-sand through the failed coating in stages, from coarse to fine.
- Machine polish until the lens is clear.
- Clean the lens and apply a UV-resistant sealant.
Headlight restoration is quoted with your vehicle, since the work depends on how far gone the lenses are. Send photos with the quote form for a faster answer. The headlight restoration page has more detail.
Expect the work to take a good part of an hour or more for the pair. The lenses will look clear and feel smooth, and we show you the result in the walk-around, just as we do with paint.
What we can and cannot fix
We can fix haze, yellowing and light oxidation on the outside of the lens. We cannot fix moisture inside the housing, cracks, or a bulb that is failing. We also cannot adjust headlight aim; that is a job for a garage.
If both lenses are badly pitted, we will tell you whether restoration is worthwhile or a replacement makes more sense.
Some owners try a kit from the auto parts store. Those can help, but without a UV sealant the haze often returns within months. Wet-sanding properly and sealing the lens is the part that makes a restoration last.
Pair it with a detail
We are based in Burlington and travel to Waterdown. While we are at your home, the headlight job fits neatly alongside an exterior detail. See also our Waterdown car detailing page. Sealants fade over time, so keep the lenses washed and, if you can, parked out of strong direct sun.
Tell us on the form if the car is an older model with deeply yellowed lenses, or a newer one with just the beginnings of haze. Early restoration is easier and lasts longer, so do not wait until the beams are visibly weak. We work Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM.
