Why clean an engine bay at all

The honest answer is that an engine runs fine dirty. But a bay coated in road film, oil mist and dust hides leaks, makes servicing messier and signals neglect when a buyer lifts the hood. A clean bay also lets a mechanic spot a weeping gasket or a split hose quickly.

This page is for owners selling a car, cars heading to a show or meet, vehicles with a small oil weep they want to monitor, and anyone who simply likes it clean. If you are preparing a car for sale, our guide on detailing before selling your car explains where it earns its keep.

It is cosmetic. It will not fix a mechanical problem, and it does not replace a service.

There is also a safety benefit for the person servicing the car. A clean bay makes it easier to find the dipstick, the washer fluid cap and the battery, and a mechanic is less likely to drop a tool into grease. Some shops charge less when a bay is clean enough to work in.

How we do it safely

Water and electronics are the worry. The method is deliberate for that reason.

  1. Confirm the engine is cool, since cold water on hot components is a bad idea.
  2. Inspect the bay and note any active leaks, loose connectors or damaged parts. We do not clean over a problem we should flag.
  3. Cover or avoid the battery terminals, air intake, fuse boxes and exposed electrical connectors.
  4. Apply degreaser to oily areas and let it dwell.
  5. Agitate with soft brushes in the tight corners.
  6. Rinse with low pressure and wipe, never aiming a jet at connectors.
  7. Dry with air and microfibre towels, then dress plastic and rubber with a non-greasy finish.
  8. Show you the result at the walk-around with the hood open.

Some vehicles with exposed electronics need a gentler wipe-down approach rather than rinsing, and we choose accordingly.

We stay conservative on older or heavily modified vehicles. Cracked connectors, missing covers and aftermarket wiring are reasons to use a damp-cloth approach rather than a rinse. If a part looks unsafe to wet, we skip it and tell you why.

How long it takes

Plan for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Time depends on how much oil film and grime has built up. A lightly dusty bay is quick. A bay with years of buildup around the valve cover takes longer.

The car needs to be cool, so we ask that you do not drive it right before we arrive. After cleaning, we suggest leaving the hood open for a short time so any remaining moisture evaporates before you start it. See how long detailing takes for the bigger picture.

If you are selling the car, schedule the engine bay with the rest of the detail, since the dressing and a wipe-down give the engine a fresh look in the same visit. If you are only doing the bay, it is a short appointment that fits into a morning or afternoon.

How it is priced

Engine bay detailing is quoted with your vehicle. The bay of a compact sedan and that of a crowded V8 truck are different jobs, so a flat number would be unfair to someone.

  • Standalone: quoted with your vehicle.
  • Added to Exterior Revival or The Full Detail: quoted with your vehicle.
  • Each additional vehicle in the same booking is 20% off.

Send a photo of the open hood with your quote request. It takes about 60 seconds and we usually reply the same day.

As a guide to what drives the quote, a lightly dusty bay on a late-model car is the simple end. A bay with layers of oil film, heavy rust on brackets or a lot of aftermarket parts is more involved. A photo with the hood open is the fastest way to price it accurately.

Looking after a clean bay

A clean bay stays that way longer than you might think.

  • Wipe the top of the plastics with a damp microfibre every few weeks.
  • Fix oil or coolant weeps promptly, because they attract dirt.
  • Do not spray the bay with a pressure washer at home.
  • Ask for a re-clean ahead of selling, a meet or a service appointment.

If paint polish or coating is also on your list, our paint enhancement page covers the outside.

Do not dress the bay with a heavy, greasy product. Anything oily collects dust and becomes a mess by the next week. A light, dry-finish dressing is what we use, and it leaves plastics looking dark and even without a wet shine.

Why mobile is practical here

Engine bay work needs open space and good lighting. In your driveway in Burlington or Oakville, the hood is open under daylight and our portable lighting shows what is going on. We bring water and power, and we keep degreaser contained to the work area.

We also tell you what we notice. If a belt looks cracked or a hose is weeping, we mention it so you can take it to a mechanic.
