The SUV add-on covers the extra surface area and time. It is a flat +$30 whatever the make, so a compact crossover and a three-row family hauler cost the same to add. Sedans and coupes are the base price.

An SUV is not just a larger car. It has features that need their own attention:

• Cargo area. Carpet liners hold grit, snow melt and groceries. We lift mats and clean the lip of the tailgate.
• Third row. Rarely cleaned at home, and crumbs collect in the folds.
• Roof and roof rails. Tall surfaces that are easy to skip with a bucket and hose. Dirt and tree debris sit in the rail channels.
• Running boards and rocker panels. They collect the road spray and boots.
• Panoramic sunroof tracks. Debris in the tracks stays there until someone clears it.
• Seat-back pockets and door bins. Wrappers, coins and cracker dust accumulate where nobody looks.

Leather seats get cleaned and conditioned, and cloth seats get shampoo and extraction. Kid-seat footprints in the upholstery come out better than most people expect.

Higher panels mean more bug residue on the hood and windshield, and the large flat tailgate collects road film from highway driving on the 401 and 407. We hand wash, decontaminate with iron remover and clay, and dress the trim, rather than rely on a quick pass over the visible panels. Wheels on an SUV are larger and heavier with brake dust, so they get a proper scrub and the tires get dressed afterwards.

Escarpment weekends add a layer of their own: gravel dust from parking lots near the trailheads settles into the lower panels and wheel wells. A good wash and clay clears it before it dulls the finish.

Expect a little longer than the base times, since there is more car to cover. Ask for the extras that fit your situation:

• Smoke or odour +$50, for lingering smells.
• Winter salt mess +$40, in the cold months.
