What steam does

Steam is hot water vapour delivered at pressure. It softens dried residue, loosens oils and flushes grime out of small gaps, all with very little liquid. That makes it useful for areas that cannot be soaked: dashboards, door cards, around infotainment screens and in cupholders.

It also sanitizes the surfaces it touches by heat. We are careful with that word. Steam helps with the germs and residue on hard surfaces, but it is not a medical disinfection process, and we do not make claims beyond what heat and cleaning can do.

It suits family cars, ride-share and work vehicles, and anyone who has spilled something sticky near a seat track. Our interior detailing page explains the package steam sits inside.

Steam is also an answer to a common question: how do you clean a cupholder that is sticky to the bottom? A cloth reaches the surface and misses the ring. Steam loosens the dried sugar so we can lift it off in a minute, and it does the same on textured trim, where residue sits in the grain.

How steam is used

Steam is a step, not a standalone product. Here is where it falls in a normal interior detail.

  1. Vacuum first so steam does not push loose dirt around.
  2. Steam vent slats and louvres, then wipe immediately as grime softens.
  3. Steam cupholders, door pockets and the console storage, where spills hide.
  4. Steam seat seams, stitching and plastic trim with a brush attachment.
  5. Steam around switches and shifters using short passes so moisture stays minimal.
  6. Follow with shampoo and extraction on carpet and cloth, and conditioning on leather.
  7. Walk around with you to check high-touch areas.

Steam is kept away from sensitive electronics and screens, and we do not blast it onto delicate fabrics or headliners.

Steam is used with restraint on fabric. Directed at a seat, it relaxes stains and loosens soil before extraction. Directed too long at a headliner, it can loosen adhesive, so we avoid that. Knowing where not to use steam is as important as knowing where it works.

Time and what to expect

Steam is part of the standard 2 to 4 hours for Interior Restoration. It adds focus rather than much extra time. The result is the sort of clean you can feel: no tackiness on the console, no film on the door pull.

It also helps with odour, since many smells sit in residue rather than fabric. For heavier cases, see smoke and odour removal. For timelines, our guide to detailing times covers each package.

Because steam adds little water, there is no waiting for it to dry beyond the time the extraction step needs. Hard surfaces are dry in minutes. We often steam early in the job so everything has time to air out by the walk-around.

How it is priced

Steam cleaning is included with Interior Restoration, which starts from $119 $149. There is no separate steam price.

  • Base: Interior Restoration.
  • Size: SUV +$30, truck +$40, van or minivan +$50, exotic +$60.
  • Smoke or odour +$50, heavy stains +$50, pet hair +$40 as needed.
  • Extra vehicles in the same booking are 20% off.

The quote form takes about 60 seconds and we usually reply the same day.

As an example, a family SUV that needs vents, cupholders and carpets cleaned is Interior Restoration plus the +$30 SUV size add. If the dash and vents are the main issue, the base package is still the right choice, since steam is part of it.

Keeping surfaces clean

Steam resets surfaces. A little routine keeps them that way.

  • Wipe high-touch spots, such as the wheel, shifter and door handles, weekly.
  • Use a soft brush on vents and a dry cloth for screens.
  • Do not use solvent cleaners on trim, which can dull or crack it.
  • Keep wipes and snack wrappers out of door pockets.

Families can find more in our guide on detailing a family car.

If anyone in the car has allergies, ask us to pay particular attention to the vents, seat seams and carpet. Dust and dander accumulate there. Replace the cabin air filter on schedule too, since a clogged one pushes stale air through clean vents.

Why this is easy to do mobile

A steamer needs power and water, both of which we bring. At your driveway in Burlington or Oakville, there is nothing to arrange. Fully insured, we work at your home, your office lot or a condo garage with space beside the car.

If you are curious about a particular area, the cupholder or vents, point it out. We check it at the walk-around.
